Hairless Brain
This project stems from my nearly decade-long experience with laser hair removal—an act that once seemed like a personal choice in pursuit of beauty during adolescence. In truth, it was a response to internalized shame and self-disgust shaped by the absence of bodily autonomy. Body hair, framed as undesirable, became a site of conflict between self and social norms. The rhetoric of fashion imposes identity, narrowing acceptable aesthetics under cultural pressures. Gender expectations limit the freedom of bodily expression, subtly occupying and disciplining our bodies.
Rather than resolve this tension, my work embraces it, questioning how individuals make choices about their bodies within a culture that teaches them to despise those very bodies.
